The Salivary Glands

Cell Types

Salivary glands consist of several cell types:

  • Acinar cells - responsible for water and protein secretion
  • Ductal cells - helps move saliva to the mouth
    • Made of excretory duct cells, striated duct cells, and intercalated duct cells

  • Myoepithelial cells - surround the acini and ducts

  • Stem cells - regeneration of cells and saliva originates from stem cells residing in the ductal compartments

Salivary Gland Types

  • Parotid gland - largest of the glands and produces only serous (contains enzymes) saliva. Produces 25% of saliva
  • Submandibular gland - much smaller than parotid, but produces 70% of serous and mucous (rich in glycoproteins) saliva
  • Sublingual gland - produces mainly mucous saliva, but does not contain striated duct cells.  Produces 5% of saliva.
