ResultsTransplantation Cells from the c-Kit stem cell pools cultured from the salispheres were injected into irradiated salivary glands, at 15 Gray radiation doses. A shows the surface area of the total acinar cells in the irradiated gland, 90 days after the radiation was given. It reveals that the surface area of acinar cells were higher in the glands with transplantation. B measures in microliters the amount of saliva 90 days post-irradiation which was also significantly higher in glands with transplantation than irradiated glands. C combines A and B to show a positive correlation between the two. Each symbol corresponds to a different subject. D shows the level of brightness of c-Kit cells that were FACS purified (not as important) * E * Perhaps the most important, E shows that the injection of c-Kit cells in small amounts (300-1000 cells,) restored gland function in 9 out of 13 recipients at 120 days post-irradiation. However, injection of c-Kit cells in larger amounts showed a positive response in only 3 out of 9 recipients. |
